The Police released Synchronicity in 1983 on A&M Records. The album topped the Billboard chart for seventeen weeks. It sold more than eight million copies in the United States.

Every Breath You Take became one of the decade’s biggest singles. The band had already scored multiple top ten albums earlier in the 1980s with Ghost in the Machine and Zenyatta Mondatta.
